Karol is Chief Medical Officer of Proton Partners International. He was founder of Cancer Partners UK, Britain’s largest network of independent cancer treatment centres. He was Professor and Chairman of the Department of Cancer Medicine at Imperial College School of Medicine and is still honorary Consultant Oncologist at Hammersmith Hospital, London. He is Dean of Medicine at Britain’s first independent Medical School at the University of Buckingham and Fellow of Corpus Christi College, Cambridge where he obtained a double first.
He trained at The Middlesex and St Bartholomew’s Hospitals and researched with Nobel Prize winner, Dr. Sydney Brenner. He became a clinical fellow at Stanford University, California before directing the Ludwig Institute in Cambridge. He established the cancer research laboratory at Hammersmith Hospital and headed fundraising of £8m for a new cancer centre. From 1997 to 1999, he was Chief of the WHO Cancer Programme and from 1999 to 2002, Vice President, Global Clinical Research at Pharmacia Corporation. He has published over 300 papers and written or edited 20 books, including the standard postgraduate textbook, Treatment of Cancer.
